Oral Sedation Dentistry in Redmond
A Calmer, More Comfortable Way to Get Dental Care
If dental visits make you anxious, oral sedation can turn a stressful appointment into a quiet one.

You Are Not the Only One Who Dreads the Dentist
Roughly one in three adults avoids dental care because of fear or anxiety. Some have had a difficult experience in the past. Some find the sounds and sensations of dental work overwhelming. Some haven’t seen a dentist in many years and feel embarrassed about it. None of that is unusual, and none of it is a reason to keep putting off care.
Oral sedation is a gentle medical option that helps you stay calm and comfortable from start to finish. Patients who use sedation often describe their visit as feeling much shorter than it actually was, and many leave with little memory of the appointment itself.

How Oral Sedation Works at Redmond Way Dentistry
Oral sedation is a prescribed pill (usually in the benzodiazepine family) that you take a short time before your appointment. By the time you arrive in our downtown Redmond office, you are relaxed, drowsy, and far less aware of what is happening around you. You stay awake and able to respond to your dentist, but you are deeply at ease.
Because the medication continues to take effect over your visit, longer appointments and more involved treatment become much easier to tolerate. Many patients combine multiple procedures into a single sedation visit so they only have to plan around it once.
Patients who often benefit from oral sedation:
- Adults with significant dental anxiety or a history of difficult dental experiences
- Patients who have not been to a dentist in many years and want help getting back
- Patients with a strong gag reflex
- Patients with sensitive teeth or difficulty getting numb
- Patients combining several treatments into one longer appointment
- Patients with sensory sensitivities
Your Oral Sedation Visit
Step 1: Sedation consultation
Before we prescribe anything, your dentist reviews your medical history, current medications, and any past experiences that shape your anxiety. We talk through what you would like to be different about this visit and answer every question you have.
Step 2: Prescription and pre-visit instructions
We send a prescription to your pharmacy along with written instructions. You will learn when to take the pill, what to eat or avoid beforehand, and what to wear for the most comfortable experience.
Step 3: Arrange your driver
Oral sedation requires a responsible adult driver to bring you to and from your appointment. You should not drive, work, or make important decisions for the rest of the day.
Step 4: The appointment
You take your sedation medication at the time we specify. Your driver brings you to our office. We monitor you throughout the visit and complete the dental treatment in the quietest, calmest way possible.
Step 5: Going home and resting
Your driver takes you home to rest. The effects wear off gradually over the day. Most patients are back to feeling like themselves by the next morning, with little or no memory of the appointment.

What sedation feels like
- Relaxed, calm, and a little drowsy
- Sense of time passes much faster than the clock
- Often little or no memory of the procedure afterward
- Numbing for any actual dental work is still given separately so you feel no pain
Is Oral Sedation Safe?
When prescribed and monitored properly, oral sedation has a long track record of safety for healthy adults. Your dentist reviews your full medical history before prescribing and chooses a dose appropriate for you. We monitor your comfort and vital signs throughout the appointment and follow established protocols at every step.
If oral sedation is not the right fit for your situation (for example, if you have certain medical conditions or need a deeper level of sedation than oral medication provides), we will tell you honestly and discuss alternatives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be unconscious?
No. Oral sedation does not put you to sleep. You stay awake and able to respond, but you feel deeply relaxed and often have little memory of the visit afterward.
Will I feel any pain?
No. Numbing is given separately for any actual dental work, so the area being treated is fully numb. Oral sedation handles the anxiety and discomfort of being in the chair; local anesthetic handles pain control.
How long does it last?
Most patients feel the strongest effects for two to four hours, with lingering drowsiness for several more. Plan to rest at home for the remainder of the day.
Can I drive myself home?
No. You must have a responsible adult driver bring you to and from your appointment, and you should not drive, work, or make important decisions for the rest of the day.
Is oral sedation covered by insurance?
Sedation coverage varies. Some dental plans cover it when it is medically necessary, especially for longer or more complex procedures. We are happy to check your specific benefits before your visit.
Can I combine several treatments into one sedation visit?
Yes, and many patients prefer this. Combining procedures means you only plan around sedation once and finish more of your treatment in a single appointment.
Do you offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas)?
Currently we offer oral sedation only. Patients who need a deeper level of relaxation than nitrous provides are good candidates for our oral sedation protocol.
Can I eat or drink before my sedation appointment?
We will give you specific instructions when we prescribe the medication. In most cases there are restrictions on food and drink for a set window before your appointment.
Who is not a good candidate for oral sedation?
Patients with certain medical conditions, pregnant patients, and patients on certain medications may not be good candidates. Your dentist reviews your medical history thoroughly before prescribing anything.
